"On The Shelf" is an animation that Lena Huang and I created for Our Bodies, Our Choice, Our Voice—an event hosted by Duke & Duck in response to the overturn of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, to educate and amplify the need for these critical rights.
Our Bodies, Our Choice, Our Voice took place on Oct 22–23, 2022 at Dupont Underground in Washington, DC, and featured sixteen incredible works from twenty animators across the country.
It was important to us to show a personal and emotionally significant side of how the restrictions on reproductive freedoms profoundly affect people's lives. We came up with the story together, and each contributed to various design frames and animated scenes.

The hand animation here was created with a combination of AE shape layers and cel animation.
I took a lot of care with this scene, and getting the timing of it right was a high priority. The hand lingers upon the book, reluctant to let go, in order to convey the depth of heartbreak and regret that come from having no option but to set aside and close the door on one's lifelong dreams.
